3D Imaging (CBCT)

Unlike a conventional two-dimensional x-ray, a cone beam CT (CBCT) scan produces a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws, nerves and sinuses. Our Dentsply Sirona Orthophos SL 3D allows us to examine these structures from any angle before treatment begins.
Clinical uses
- Implant planning: bone volume and the position of the nerve and sinus
- Wisdom teeth: proximity of the roots to the nerve
- Root canal therapy: additional canals, fractures and infection
- Complex surgical cases
The patient experience
The scan takes seconds, and nothing is placed in the mouth. Each scan is limited to the area of interest and is taken only when it will inform your treatment. Your dentist can review the images with you at the same appointment, with no referral to an outside imaging centre.
Inside a 3D scan
The scan is reconstructed into a 3D model that can be rotated and viewed in cross-section. This allows your dentist to measure bone precisely, trace the path of the nerve and plan treatment before the procedure begins.
Same-Day Crowns (CEREC)

CEREC allows us to design, fabricate and place a ceramic crown in a single appointment, without conventional impressions, a temporary crown or a return visit.
The process
- Tooth preparation
- Digital scan with our Primescan
- Computer-aided crown design
- Milling from a ceramic block in our CEREC Primemill
- Finishing, fitting and bonding
Same-day crowns are metal-free and shade-matched to your natural teeth. Where a laboratory-made restoration is more appropriate, your dentist will advise you. Learn more about crowns and bridges.
Digital Impressions

The Dentsply Sirona Primescan intraoral scanner captures a precise, full-colour 3D model of your teeth in minutes, replacing conventional impression material.
Advantages
- Greater comfort, particularly for patients with a strong gag reflex
- High accuracy for a better-fitting result
- No radiation
- 3D models you can review on screen with your dentist
Digital scans are used for CEREC crowns, implant planning, surgical guides, night guards and sleep apnea appliances, and are sent electronically to our partner laboratories.
In-House 3D Printing

Our Dentsply Sirona Primeprint system fabricates dental appliances on site from biocompatible resins, with automated washing and curing for consistent results.
Applications
- Implant surgical guides
- Night guards and occlusal splints
- Sleep apnea appliances
- Diagnostic models
- Provisional crowns and bridges
In-house fabrication shortens turnaround times, and digital records allow an appliance to be remade without new impressions. Dental implants · Sleep apnea testing

Printed in our clinic
A dental model printed on our Primeprint from a digital scan. Models like this are used to plan treatment and to fabricate appliances with an accurate fit.
Guided Implant Placement
For implant treatment, these technologies work together:
- A CBCT scan maps the bone, nerve and sinus.
- A digital impression records the teeth and gums.
- The two datasets are merged to plan the implant position virtually.
- A surgical guide is 3D printed from the plan.
- The guide directs the implant to the planned position, often allowing a less invasive procedure.
Your dentist will advise whether guided placement is suitable for your case. Learn more about dental implants.
Our In-House Digital Lab
Our 3D printers and milling unit operate on site, allowing crowns, surgical guides and appliances to be fabricated within the clinic.

Common questions
Is a CBCT scan safe?
CBCT uses a low radiation dose, limited to the area being examined. We recommend a scan only when it will inform your treatment.
Can every crown be completed in one visit?
Many single crowns are suitable. Bridges and certain materials may be better fabricated by a dental laboratory; your dentist will advise you.
How long is a same-day crown appointment?
A same-day crown requires one extended appointment. Your dentist will provide a time estimate for your treatment.
Is digital scanning comfortable?
Most patients find it more comfortable than conventional impressions. You can breathe and swallow normally, and we can pause at any time.
Do you still use impression material?
Most impressions are now taken digitally. A conventional impression may occasionally be preferred.
Can my scans be shared with another dentist or specialist?
Yes. With your consent, CBCT images and digital scans can be shared securely with your other dental providers.
Will my insurance cover a CBCT scan or same-day crown?
Coverage varies by plan. We direct bill all insurance providers and can submit a pre-determination before treatment.
