Sedation Pre-Op Instructions

Please note the following pre-operation instructions in advance of your sedation. If you have any general questions before your sedation appointment please contact us.

  • Do not eat or drink ANYTHING a minimum of 8 hours prior to your appointment. If you have medication to take prior to the appointment, a small sip of water is acceptable.
  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior to your sedation appointment. Alcohol may increase the depth of your anesthesia or the effect of the medicines which you will be given after your appointment.
  • Do not take recreational drugs including medical cannabis 48 hours prior to your sedation. This is for your own safety to minimize risk of any possible side effects it may have with your sedation.
  • Contact us if there has been a change in your general health (such as a severe cold, fever etc.).
  • Do not smoke for 24 hours.
  • Do not take Aspirin within 24 hours before or after your appointment.
  • Leave your valuables at home.
  • Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, hair pieces, nail polish (gel nails or shellac), high heels, perfume or make-up to your appointment.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes which are not restrictive to the neck or arms, and a short-sleeved shirt.
  • If you have asthma, please bring your inhaler with you.
  • If you take ANY PRESCRIPTION medication that has been prescribed by a PHYSICIAN please bring them all with you.
  • You must be accompanied to your appointment and home by a responsible adult who can be contacted at any time after your procedure. We ask that this person stay in the clinic during your procedure so they are available as soon as you are ready for discharge. After your sedation procedure your caregiver must stay with you for a minimum of 24 hours after your appointment.
  • Before your appointment you will need to sign paperwork and/or make payment for your services. Please make sure your caregiver is able to help you with these arrangements (you will be coming out of anesthesia and probably a little disoriented).
  • Do not drive or operate any motor vehicle/machinery, travel alone by taxi or bus or make any important decisions for a minimum of 24 hours after your sedation procedure (longer if you are feeling drowsy or disoriented).
  • For surgical procedures: Have ice packs made (ice cubes in zip-lock bags), plenty of water, soups, ice cream, pudding, yogurt, oatmeal, and eggs are a few of the foods you may choose to eat for the first two days after surgery. You will be given more instructions after the procedure.
  • Any other instructions as per dentist.
