SURGICAL + SEDATION
Comfortable, anxiety-free dental care in Mission.
If the thought of a dental appointment makes you anxious, you are not alone, and it should not keep you from the care you need. At Midtown Dental in Calgary’s Mission community, our dentists offer IV sedation so you can feel calm and relaxed while your treatment is done.
We are a general dental practice with a dedicated focus on sedation and surgical dentistry. One team can complete your fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, implant surgery and even your cleaning under sedation, often in a single visit instead of several. Many patients tell us they remember little of the appointment afterwards.

Who IV sedation is for
IV (intravenous) sedation is a form of conscious sedation. Medication is given through a small IV line in your arm or hand, so it takes effect quickly and your dentist can adjust it throughout the appointment. You stay able to breathe on your own and respond to simple instructions, but most patients feel deeply relaxed and drowsy.
IV sedation may suit you if you:
- Feel anxious or fearful about dental treatment, or have put off care because of it
- Have a strong gag reflex, or find it hard to stay still or keep your mouth open for long
- Need a lot of treatment and would rather complete it in fewer, longer visits
- Are having wisdom teeth removed, implants placed or other surgical treatment
- Have found local freezing hard to get working in the past
Treatment we provide under IV sedation: cleanings and hygiene care; fillings, crowns and bridges; root canal therapy; extractions and wisdom teeth removal; dental implants, including same-day options; implant-supported dentures and full-mouth rehabilitation.
IV sedation is not right for everyone. Some medical conditions and medications need extra planning or a different approach, which is why every sedation patient starts with a consultation.
What to expect
- Consultation. You meet one-on-one with your dentist. We review your medical history and medications, examine your teeth, take any imaging needed and plan your treatment. We also confirm that IV sedation is a safe choice for you.
- Before your appointment. We give you written pre-op instructions. The main ones: nothing to eat or drink for at least 8 hours beforehand (a sip of water with your usual medication is fine), no alcohol for 24 hours, and no recreational drugs or cannabis for 48 hours. A responsible adult needs to come with you, wait at the clinic and take you home.
- During treatment. Once the IV is placed, you begin to feel relaxed within a few minutes. Your breathing, oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored throughout. Local freezing is still used, so the treatment area is numb.
- Recovery and going home. You rest at the clinic until you are ready to leave with your escort, who needs to stay with you for 24 hours. For the rest of that day, plan to rest at home and avoid driving, operating machinery or making important decisions.
- Follow-up. We give you aftercare instructions and check in on how you are doing.
Safety and training
Every one of our dentists completed a hospital-based general practice residency (GPR) after dental school, and each is sedation certified through the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta. A residency is additional hospital-based training in treating medically complex patients, emergency care and sedation.
- Dr. Vikas Khanna: residency at Montefiore Medical Center, New York
- Dr. Aaron Liu: residency at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, University of Manitoba
- Dr. Jeremy Brandelli: residency at the University of Alberta Hospital
Your safety comes before everything else. We screen your health at the consultation, follow the College’s standards for sedation, and keep emergency equipment and trained staff on hand at every sedation appointment.
Cost and insurance
The cost of IV sedation depends on how long your appointment is and the treatment you need. We give you a written estimate before anything is booked, so there are no surprises.
- We direct bill all insurance companies and accept all forms of benefits, including the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).
- Many plans cover part of the cost of sedation for certain procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal. Coverage varies, so we can send a pre-determination to your insurer first.
- Combining several treatments into one sedation visit can mean fewer appointments and less time off work.
Common questions about IV sedation
Will I be asleep?
No. IV sedation is conscious sedation, so you are not fully unconscious, unlike general anaesthesia. You stay relaxed and able to respond, and many patients remember little or nothing of the appointment.
Does it hurt?
You may feel a small pinch when the IV is placed. After that, the sedation helps you relax, and local freezing numbs the area being treated.
How long does the sedation last?
The sedation wears off over a few hours, but you may feel drowsy for the rest of the day. That is why your escort stays with you for 24 hours and you should not drive until the next day.
Can I drive myself home?
No. A responsible adult must bring you, wait at the clinic during your treatment, drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
Can I eat before my appointment?
No. Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your appointment. A small sip of water to take your usual medication is fine. Your dentist will tell you if any medications need to be adjusted.
What is the difference between IV sedation, oral sedation and nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the lightest option and wears off within minutes. Oral sedation is a pill taken before your visit. IV sedation works fastest, can be adjusted throughout treatment and is often chosen for longer or surgical appointments. Your dentist recommends the option that suits your health and treatment.
Is IV sedation safe?
For healthy patients, IV sedation provided by trained dentists with proper monitoring has a strong safety record. Like any medication, it carries some risks, which your dentist reviews with you at the consultation.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book a sedation consultation directly. If you already have a dentist, they can also refer you to us for treatment under sedation, and you return to their office afterwards.
Can I have my cleaning done under sedation?
Yes. We provide hygiene care under sedation, and it can often be combined with other treatment in the same visit.
Is sedation covered by my insurance?
It depends on your plan and the procedure. We direct bill all insurance companies, accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and can check your coverage with your insurer before treatment.
